City has fine model for charter schools
Originally published February 5, 2005
The column "The charter fallacy" (Opinion Commentary, Jan. 26) suggests that
no model exists for successful, innovative charter schools in Baltimore.
Quite to the contrary, New Schools Initiative schools have been operating
like charter schools in Baltimore for more than a decade.
These schools are examples of true choice for parents. Furthermore, Maryland
State Assessment data show that New Schools Initiative schools have
outperformed other Baltimore public schools.
If we want innovation and excellence in our children's public education, we
must stand together with James W. Campbell and the other school board
members to demand full and adequate funding from the state and city for all
of our city's public schools -- both regular and charter.
